The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4 release date it keeping fans on the edge of their seats. The show has exploded in popularity and solidified its place as an all time classic. The first series of The Handmaid’s Tale was based directly off the 1985 novel with which it shares its namesake. Following the stand out success of the show Margaret Atwood, the books author, released a sequel to the book in 2019 called The Testaments.However, The Handmaid’s Tale has carved out its own path and the show has continued to diverge paths with the source material.

What is The Handmaid’s Tale about?

The show is set in a dystopian future where religious extremists have taken over great swaths of America and completely subdued the female population. It’s set in a time where fertility rates have plummeted and a slave class of fertile “handmaids” have been created to serve the upper echelons of the new ruling class. The plot follows their journey into slavery along with the pain and angwish they feel as they try and turn the tables. 

Elisabeth Moss stars as the show’s protagonist, June, and is amazing throughout. The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 sees the return of the shows regularly and heavy hitting cast which includes Joseph Fiennes, Ann Dowd, Yvonne Strahovski, Samira Wiley, Bradley Whitford, and Max Minghella. The exacting and dialogue are marvelous, with so many standout performances throughout each series.

The Handmaid’s Tale has won stacks of awards. Securing eight Primetime Emmy awards, as well as a Golden Globe for the Best TV series. Moss also won the Golden Globe for Best Actress.

Where will The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4 pick up from?

The final episode of The Handmaid’s Tale season 3, “Mayday”, saw June alongwith the other handmaids and marthas put a daring plan into action. Their aim was to rescue the young children who are in danger of becoming indoctrinated and persecuted by the state. In the dead of night, they lead the country’s youngsters through forest and thicket to an empty runaway. Here they are to rendezvous with an aircraft which is to take them safely to Canada.

June risks her life for everyone and ends up taking a bullet for the people she cares about most. Her character takes a dark turn as she ends up murdering a guard via a gunshot to the face.

The series ends with the plane arriving safely in Canada and Luke awaiting her arrival only to be left empty handed. June’s love for her daughter and she simply won’t leave without her Hannah. As the camera pans out we see June being carried back by the other handmaids.

The official teaser trailer for the fourth series was dropped on the 24th June by Hulu. It’s a mixture of some shots from the new series featuring a voiceover from June prepping her handmaid’s, and sold old clips.

If the trailer is anything to go by the fourth installment is going to be one hell of a wild ride for all the series fans. It hints that this season could in fact be the last. 

What is the release date of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4?

The show was renewed for a fourth time in July 2019 and fans have been eagerly awaiting its release date ever since. The initial release date of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4 was supposed to be autumn time in 2020. However, like with many other movies and shows, there have been a number of setbacks due to COVID and filming has been forced to stop. They managed to squeeze in two weeks on set before everything was called off.

Hulu has announced the show will be released in 2021 but has given no official release date. Unfortunately the wait must continue for many eager fans.
